Getting started

  1. Open Fluent, choose your native language and your goal: TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, Conversation or Job Interview.
  2. If you like, type your first name so the tutor can greet you. It stays on your device.
  3. Allow Microphone and Speech Recognition. Speaking is the whole point of the app.
  4. On Home, tap Start today’s session. The tutor asks a question out loud: answer in English, then pause, and the tutor replies.
  5. Tap ✕ to finish and see your report, then try tomorrow’s drill.

The ⋯ button during a session lets you end it and see the report, discard it, or keep practising.

How your scores work

Each score comes from something the app can observe. If something can’t be measured, it shows a dash instead of a guess.

ACCURACY

Grammar and word choice, judged by the tutor from what you said.

FLUENCY

Your pace, how long your answers are and the pauses inside them, measured on your iPhone.

CLARITY

How sure Apple’s speech recognition was of your words.

Your overall score combines them: 40% Accuracy, 30% Fluency and 30% Clarity. Fluency needs at least a few sentences (about 8 words and 4 seconds of speech) to be measured.

Troubleshooting

Didn’t catch that — tap the mic and try again.

Fluent didn’t hear clear speech. Practise somewhere quiet, keep the iPhone close to you, speak at a normal volume, then tap the mic again. Make sure Microphone and Speech Recognition are allowed for Fluent in the Settings app.

Speech recognition is off on this iPhone.

Turn on Dictation in Settings › General › Keyboard, then tap the mic. With Dictation on, speech recognition can run on your iPhone: it’s faster and works with a weaker connection.

Speech recognition isn’t available right now.

Without on-device recognition, Apple’s speech recognition needs the internet. Check your connection (or turn on Dictation, above) and tap the mic.

Sorry — I lost the connection.

The tutor needs an internet connection to reply. Check Wi-Fi or mobile data, then tap to try again.

“No report yet” when I end a session

The report scores what you say, so you need to answer the tutor at least once. If you tap ✕ before that, Fluent explains why and lets you keep practising or end the session.

Couldn’t score this one.

The report couldn’t be created, usually because of the connection. Your conversation is saved: check your connection and tap Try again. Fluent never shows made-up scores, so if a trustworthy report can’t be made, it tells you.

The microphone isn’t available.

Another app, a call or a recording may be using the microphone. Close it, then tap the mic to try again. If it keeps happening, restart Fluent.

Common questions

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up, email or login.

Is Fluent free?

Yes, Fluent is free to download and use, on iPhone and iPad.

Does it work offline?

No. The tutor conversation and reports need an internet connection.

What is the Job Interview goal?

Your tutor becomes a friendly interviewer and asks the questions employers really ask, such as “Tell me about yourself”, your strengths and weaknesses, teamwork and salary expectations. It corrects your English as you answer.

I don’t have an exam. Is Fluent for me?

Yes. Choose Conversation to talk about everyday topics and get the same corrections, reports and drills.

Why does Fluent ask for my OK before the first session?

To reply and score your sessions, the text of what you say goes to Fluent’s AI tutor service, which uses Anthropic’s Claude through OpenRouter. The app explains this once and sends nothing until you agree. Read the privacy policy for details.

Is my voice recorded?

No. Apple’s speech recognition turns your voice into text; Fluent never saves audio and never sends it to our servers. Read the privacy policy for details.

How do I delete my data?

Your profile and history are stored only on your device: deleting the app deletes them. Our servers have no conversation database; the privacy policy describes the short-lived technical logs.
